In June 2025, the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP), with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) serving as the Implementing Agency, sponsored and facilitated the implementation of a Solar Energy Project in Burum and Sauka Communities, as well as the construction of a Public Smart Toilet Facility in Takushara Community.
These interventions were designed to improve the living standards of community residents through the provision of sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure. The Solar Energy Project has enhanced access to clean, reliable, and renewable energy, thereby supporting household activities, community services, and local economic development. Similarly, the Public Smart Toilet Facility in Takushara was established to improve sanitation, promote public health, and contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for community members.
Following the successful completion of the implementation phase, the projects have reached the final stage of their lifecycle. Arrangements are currently being made for the formal closeout and handover of the facilities to the beneficiary communities. The handover process will empower the communities to assume ownership, management, and responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the projects, thereby ensuring their sustainability and long-term benefits.
The closure and handover ceremony will mark an important milestone in the partnership between GEF-SGP, UNDP, and the beneficiary communities, demonstrating a shared commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, improved livelihoods, and community-driven ownership of development initiatives. The event will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the projects, recognize the contributions of stakeholders, and reinforce the mechanisms necessary for the continued success and sustainability of the facilities.
